Why does the cost of concrete vary so much between contractors?

Each contractor uses their own specific "recipe" for their concrete mix.

Some even choose to mix their own. Although it is possible with asphalt, it is easier to take short cuts with concrete. Using a cheaper rock, less cement, and adding more water are ways to make a yard of concrete cost less and go further.

Cost is also reflected in the use of fiber mesh or wire mesh verses rebar. Unfortunately, there is no good way to know what they are doing with their mix. Taking these short cuts will lead to surface defects that can show up anywhere from year 1 to year 4 or 5 maybe longer.

The best way to protect yourself is to choose a reputable, licensed concrete contractor. Make sure they are using properly engineered concrete that is tracked and monitored for quality by its manufacturer. Also get a solid guarantee in writing stating exactly what is covered.

During the basing phase, it is also the time to develop a drainage plan that dos not leave you with puddles of water or a drainage plan allowing water to flow towards your house or garage.

We will take the extra step on projects which have drainage issues to shoot elevations and work with the homeowner to make sure the best drainage possible is set before we install asphalt or concrete.
