Is the type of base materials used important?

Yes, first it is very important to have a base that combines the right amount of rocks and fines to allow for the proper amount of compaction.

There are many types of basing materials out there. All are very similar from Dolomite to Limestone to Conbit (recycled asphalt & concrete combined). The key factor in base is again the ratio of rocks to fines so you can have proper compaction. Getting a base that is ¾ means the largest rock in the mix is ¾ diameter and is combined with fines. Fines is the filler that fills the voids so the rocks can lock together. Avoid a high amount of clay in the mix. Clay is not a good binding agent.

During the basing phase, it is also the time to develop a drainage plan that dos not leave you with puddles of water or a drainage plan allowing water to flow towards your house or garage.

We will take the extra step on projects which have drainage issues to shoot elevations and work with the homeowner to make sure the best drainage possible is set before we install asphalt or concrete.
